José Pistola’s closes after 19 years in Center City

José Pistola’s has closed at 263 S. 15th St. after a 19-year run, leaving another vacancy on a Center City block that already lost longtime dive McGlinchey’s last year.

The owners announced the closure on Instagram after initially telling customers that the bar was dealing with a maintenance problem. Their later statement said the business could not reopen and that the immediate focus would be helping staff. They did not publicly give a full explanation for the shutdown.

The distinction matters: this is the end of the Center City location, not the entire Pistola’s group. Sancho Pistola’s in Fishtown and Pistola’s Del Sur in East Passyunk remain open, according to the company’s public-facing information and local coverage.

For regulars, the loss is bigger than a menu change. José Pistola’s became known for craft beer, Mexican-inspired food, late nights, and a casual room that felt unusually steady while the surrounding neighborhood changed.

The owners’ note also keeps the focus where it belongs right now: on the workers affected by an abrupt closure. Any future plan for the address—or a fuller account of what forced the decision—should be treated as unconfirmed until the owners or property representatives say more.
